New Shed

Options
Hi

I have just given contract to somebody for a new shed building at the back of my house, it is 6 meter wide by 5 meter deep but i just measured and its 6.5 by 4.7 and all the walls are different size by a few cms like in the front it is 6.5cm but at the back same wall is 6.2 meter. Is this normal to go off by 20 to 30 cms?

No, it's not normal for a rectangular building to be built out of true.
Check the inner measurements on the diagonal - one corner to the opposite corner, like an X. If they are different, the building is not square.

OP, can you clarify if you mean the shed has been built already and has varying dimensions, or are you talking about the garden not being the same size on opposing walls?

If the latter, then it is completely normal for gardens not to be square. ;)

If the former - then did you check the need for planning permission before having it built?

  • I am also confused as to whether or not the OP is referring to the dimensions of their garden or the building in question. I'm assuming they mean the former (if so yes its completely normal for it to not be completely square) because if its the latter then that's a big "shed".

Is this an attached shed (a lean-to)? And will it be close to the property boundary?

If so, be careful you don't fall foul of building regulations, especially regarding fire resistance.

I know it's not what you asked about, so ignore if irrelevant.

Thanks for your inputs and sorry for not being clearer
Its a new outbuilding that is being made, the garden is about 7 meter wide
the front of the outbuilding is about 6.5m
but I feel it gets narrow as we go back
i measured the back wall and it is 6.2 meter
It should have been a rectangular building like any other outbuilding.
The shed is not an existing building but a new one.
We asked him to build a 6mX5m which is 30sqm which was permitted development.

By the sound of it the PD criteria which is more important in your case is the %age of the original garden area being built on. How much of the garden will still be left once the shed is built?

You might also come up against the height restriction, what kind of roof will it have, and what will the highest point be?

Also bear in mind you need an eaves overhang, plus gutters. These will make the shed wider at the eaves level than at the base. Shed measurements are usually taken at base level, not the eaves. Not having guttering on a shed of that size would be a big mistake - added to which by the sound of it you haven't allowed for access for the gutters to be cleaned and for the shed to be maintained.

Have you told your neighbours what you are planning to do? If they don't know, then there is a good chance they will object to something of that size in your garden.

You won't need a measure, it tapers from enormous to minute. 6.5cm is about 3inch where 6.2 meters is more like 20 feet.

I would suggest it has been built poorly, a few cm out I can't imagine is an issue (never measured mine, but clearly they should be square or as near as) but any more than that I would query it with whoever built it.
