First meter read after switch
I am taking part in the latest Cheap Energy Club 2 year switch to Green Network Energy. The switch from my current supplier, Outfox, takes place on 8th December.
I have been asked by Green Network to provide opening readings today. Is that correct as 5 days before the switch seems to be too early. I don't want to be charged twice for the next 5 days!

@BarGin
The meter readings you give to your new supplier GNE is the one that will be verified and then passed to Outfox so both firms will use the same meter readings.
There should be no double charging.
A lot of companies ask a few days in advance for an opening reading.
https://www.uswitch.com/gas-electricity/guides/what-happens-after-i-switch-energy-supplier/You DO need to take a meter reading
On the day of your supply switchover, make sure to take a meter reading and submit it to your new supplier.
This will be shared with your old supplier, who will send a final bill or credit your bank account accordingly.
You may wish to cancel any direct debits to your old supplier to be safe as well.0 -
On the Uswitch page it does say to give your new supplier on the changeover day which makes sense. I can't understand why GNE are asking for them 5 days early.0

My current supplier asked for an opening reading 3 days before the switch date. That was the reading used by both companies on their bills (after it had been verified independently)
So the given reading was out by 24kWh on the switch day but in financial terms it was 3p cheaper (as the new tariff had very slightly cheaper kWh cost)
It wont make much of a difference to your costs.0 -
Whatever meter readings that a consumer provides are passed on to a data collector for industry verification:
https://octopus.energy/blog/secret-life-opening-meter-reading/
The verified readings are then used to open and close your accounts.
Disputes can only be raised if the difference between the readings is sufficiently high. If the difference is more than 1200 kWh for gas, or 250 kWh for electricity, then the dispute can be raised; if the difference is within these values, the readings are deemed to be accurate, and the dispute cannot be raised. These are the values set by OFGEM, to regulate disputes. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
You won't be charged twice.
Are you up to date with the meter readings you already give to Outfox ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
You can enter meter readings as often as you like, my switch to Octopus completes on Wednesday but I've been inputting my meter readings every day for a week to OFTM and I've been checking that there's no new direct debit been set up by OFTM, a bit belt a braces but it costs me nothing to do, just my £150 credit to get back now.0

Depends on when the new supplier wants the reading(s). The new supplier then passes the readings to your old supplier so both your closing meter readings and your opening readings should be the same.
For example, in my own case my switch to EDF is scheduled to complete on December 10 and EDF have provided a window to submit readings from December 08 till December 17.0 -
As my new company currently charges more than my previous company, I would like to give readings as late as possible. I have decided to give both companies daily readings until the switch date as suggested by @Pete99.0

Depends on whether both companies accept daily readings. It is also likely that the new supplier will regard the first reading as the opening reading and will communicate that to your old supplier. So therefore submitting more readings will be pointless.
Also if you provide the reading too early or too late based on the date your new supplier asks for the readings the reading will likely be estimated.
The new supplier doesn't give the date for the submission of the opening readings just because they have nothing better to do. There is a reason for it and that reason is so that you don't get charged twice for the same energy!0
