Tape over piercing for kids

Hi
DD got her ears pierced recently. It is allowed in school but she needs to take a tape with her to put over piercing during PE.

Which tape is used? I was thinking about scotch tape but not sure if there any better alternatives? Ta

Use medical tape. The soft white stuff that you use to stick bandages. you can buy it in superdrug or any big supermarket. Regular tape will make the skin sore and possibility pull out the earring.

There’s the issue of where to put them at school so tapeing makes sense.

Could someone explain why the boys tape theirs in football and not just take them out and leave them with the watching parent?

Depends how recently they've been done as to whether you should take them out or not

Some people like the look of them but dislike actually pushing them through so would rather cover (personally I'd rather take them out but then I've had mine done for 35 years so can go a long time without them in and it's easy to shove back through

    Threefold.

    1. They could close up - for the fistula to form properly, the piercing needs to have a good six months to heal uninterfered with.

    2. Children are grubby. Especially when they've been playing football. Putting them back in, particularly when they haven't healed fully creates microtears inside the lobe just at the time there is likely to be a lot of bacteria on the skin.

    3. Put the two together and you're far more likely to have infections - and because the first reaction of many parents is to take the studs out, the healing response from 1. makes it more likely that the outside will heal over, trapping infection inside (causing lumps & abscesses). If this happens, what they actually need to do is leave the studs in to keep the hole open for pus to drain, bathe in hot salty water (not Dettol, iodine or antiseptic creams, all of which do nothing to address the infection at its source) and seek medical advice if it doesn't ease within 48 hours or strands of red can be seen spreading towards the cheek.

As a result, it's far better to tape them, thus preventing them from getting caught or infected.

(Expertise - I have a lot of piercings and used to houseshare with a professional piercer).

I used to use a food-safe blue plaster when I had mine done.

  • I use micro porus tape on mine. I don't just put it on when they piercings are new, I tape my studs over each night before I go to bed to stop my hair snagging on earrings. Weird I know but I have a thing about it!
