Knitting needles

Has anyone taken knitting needles in their carry on luggage to the US without any problems?
I've looked at the U.K. & TSA websites & whilst it appears they're ok to be taken in hand luggage, very often reality is different.
If anyone has what sort of needles did you use? I've tried knitting with plastic without much success but wondered if taking aluminium ones would be ok - I've got a pair of bamboo ones coming but I don't know if they'll be as successful as the plastic ones.

I used a Knitpicks circular on a long haul flight. I made sure though that I took with me a padded, self-addressed envelope so I could post them to myself if security didn't let me take them. I knitted the last row with spare thread so I could just pull out the needle if necessary without losing the stitches, and just had to pick up from the row below if I was allowed to take them. Knitted happily for the best part of 24 hours. I use the interchangeables, but they do fixed as well.0

Thanks Ladydee - both for the advice & not thinking I was strange in wanting to knit !
The bamboo needles came & they're ok - not my first choice but if it gives me less hassle at security I'll suffer them.
Will let you know how I get on!0 -
Just thought I'd update with my experience.
I took the bamboo needles along with a freebie pair of aluminium ones to see if any questions would be asked & had no problems at all either going or coming back0
