Temporary structure whilst building extension

Options
We are going through early stages of building extension as part of it we will be demolishing our existing garage which is storing tools and a classic mini which I’m mid way restoration.
Moving the car is going to be difficult given that it doesn’t have a floor at the moment, was thinking that I could pop up a shed in the front garden for material storage and tools and the car whilst I get the old bit demolished and rebuilt. As it will only be a temp structure hopefully only there for a few months whilst we crack on I’m not sure if planning approval would be required. Planning portal suggests that any structure forward of the existing propert line would require it, but as it’s temporary in nature I’m not sure?

Thanks

  • Pp will be needed. If the Council turn it down, get a large box trailer to put it in. Winter is a good time to pick one up cheap.

I'd personally put it up and email the planning office telling them that it is genuinely temporary until the extension is built. Set your own deadline within that email to remove it and ask if they would also respect that date.

I very much doubt they'll start taking enforcement proceedings against a shed if you've proactively told them the date it will be gone by. It would be a waste of resource. By the time you'd put in a planning application and waited for the reply, it would be gone.

It might be that they'd have given permission anyway.

    Tarpaulin? :)
  • Our neighbours had a shipping container put in their front garden while their extension is being built. They didn’t need planning but I assume that’s because a shipping container is taken to be a temporary structure.

I agree with the above - run it past the council or just do it, they are unlikely to take enforcement action if it really is temporary as it’s not worth their time or money.
