Can you use personal credit cards for business?

Just wondering if you can do that?

Specifically the AMEX platinum cashback?

Are there any implications? Can't claim back VAT etc? AMEX don't like it?

I understand that some people don't like mixing and don't like HMRC looking into their personal purchases, but I'm planning to close and reopen the platinum one for a clean record.

Santander has one for 1% and £30 annual fee, whereas AMEX personal ones are like 1.5% and £25 annual fee?

Has anyone done this? Thanks

I used a personal credit card for my business for many years.
Just kept it & the payments totally separate from my personal expenditure.
Probably against the 'rules' but worked for me.
VAT has nothing to do with it.

Just quickly asked AMEX, they said it's not against their term of use :j

Barclaycard takes a less enlightened view on this matter.

From section 8 of its terms and conditions for personal cards:
"Your card is for personal use and you shouldn't use it for business purposes. If we're worried your card is being misused, we may put a stop on it."
  • Well, I've been paying VAT and Corp Tax on Barclays for couple of years and no one complained. Description only says HMRC, so it could be personal tax payments. I maximise use of personal cards for business expenses to earn points/miles/cashback, etc.
  • The only problem I can see is that if a purchase is made on behalf of a business rather than a personal one you may not be covered for S75.
For petrol etc I see no problem.
