My In laws boiler stopped working last week , I had a plumber out to fix it , he traced the fault to the stop !!!! in the expansion tank being turned off , the boiler had run out of enough water to work.
My in laws have not had any work done to the boiler or expansion tank , so there was no reason for the stop !!!! to be turned off , however they do have a neighbour who I don't trust and has keys , I woud not put it past him o come in and turn it off , so my question is , if the stop !!!! was turned off , how long would it take for the boiler to stop working , days , months years ? (roughly)
It's a worcester boiler

Is it not possible it was turned off innocently by the neighbour, if he was keeping an eye while your parents were away? Maybe overflow was leaking, and he tried to stop it?0

They weren't away , it wasn't leaking ,0

Turn the stop-valve off again and see how long it takes?
But to be frank it's much more likely in hard water areas (like Essex) that the ball-valve did not drop when the water level fell in the small CH tank and so didn't allow water in to refill it...
So ball-valve stuck rather that stop-valve shut?

In any case you'd be wise to keep an regular eye on that tank for a dripping valve and correct water level / overflow due to expansion for a bit? It's possible the water was deliberately stopped by whomever because of a drip, drip, drip and overflow?0 -
it was definitely turned off , as the plumber turned it on again, it wasn't dripping , or had got stuck etc
Just to reiterate, my in laws neighbour spends too much time in their house , He doesn't work , comes round to use their computer for long periods , and in general seems to be taking advantage ,
if the boiler was to go wrong he might expect them to ask him to have a look at it and pay him ,where as they asked me and I arranged for a plumber to go in0 -
Plumber or engineer on the Gas Safe Register? You need the latter.0

The fault HAS been fixed now and the boiler is working ok0

Not rant about the neighbour on here.
Alternatively go round to the neighbour with tea, cakes and :eek:0 -
You need to explain your concerns to your in-Laws, and let them - as adults - make an informed decision about this person.

All i am asking is roughly how long would it take for the water level to run down to stop the boiler from working , I don't need any other info , the ball valve was not stuck , the over flow wasn't dripping , I don't see any ranting going on , thanks for your help tho0 -
If the system was working correctly and not being bled it could take ages, if it was being bled or a sludge system then days.0
