CLaiming UC (Self-employed) wanting to do additional employment.

I have been in UC for just over two years and was hit by the MIF. Used some of my savings to promote my business but not lots as I had to keep a lot to cover the rent shortfall. I have got to a near stable level of income and still receiving the same UC amount. Looking to get back in to employment to top up my money to 'try' and have some sort of social life (99% of the last two years has been work/sleep) no holidays or time off! I work more like 100 hrs a week for a UC entitlement for 35 hrs ! So need to get a bit more income to at least try and do something with my life.

What I am wanting to know is how would me getting a 'job' all be it part time affect the UC I get for my self-employment. Do they look at which is bringing in more and class this as the main job (which would mean I am not technically self-employed). Or do they calculate to total income I get regardless of where it comes from. ? (I am hoping for the latter)

I think you may have to ask your work coach about this.

    Read this link about it:

    https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/universal-credit-and-self-employment-quick-guide/universal-credit-and-self-employment-quick-guide

I read it as they have to decide which job would be your main employment so, presumably, it would depend how many hours you spend doing your self employment and how many hours you spend doing your employee job.

What happens next I am not sure! They will obviously take into account both earnings from self employment and part time employment in the assessment for your UC.

Whether you would then meet the MIF requirements with the two combined - ie 35 hrs @NMW or whether they would look at the self employment separately and say you are not earning NMW for the hours put in there is something I think you would need to ask your work coach.

Let is know the outcome as it may help others.
