Use of Credit Cards - Probably Overthinking this

Hi Everyone

I am probably overthinking this but I thought it best to ask you guys on the forum as you have all been great previously when I have asked questions.

These are my current cards with my current income of £28,000

Halifax - £2.500 Limit - Open since Oct 2012
Barclaycard Freedom Rewards - £6,500 Limit - Open Since Feb 2017
AMEX - £6,000 Limit - Open Since Sep 18 - Was opened to take advantage of £50 Amazon voucher offer

I spend around £400-500 a month across them all and pay them all in full but I am thinking I am overcomplicating them. I am not sure how long the Barclaycard one is going to keep going as I know that are no longer accepting new applicants and was thinking of closing one of them, either the AMEX or Barclaycard due to simplifying it.

I am buying in the next year or two so wanted to check what you guys reckon I should do?

Many thanks in advance for any response and if I haven't given enough info, just let me know

Carry on as you are - more than one card is always a good idea - three is not excessive

    What about bank accounts -
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Keep the Halifax one as from a credit record point of view having a CC open for a long time is a plus.

    Hi Both

in terms of bank accounts, I only have two, my main one with Halifax and one with Barclays which my CC direct debits go through. Would it be bad to close on of the accounts with a higher limit and then possible request a raised limit on the Halifax one. I know the other two are reward cards but I was just wondering?

    Many thanks

You don't have an excessive amount of cards, and so long as none of them has a cost involved, there would be no real benefit to closing them.

On the other hand, if there was one of them you weren't using, there would be no real benefit to keeping it open either.

That is very true, I just think it might be simpler now that I have got the voucher from the AMEX just to keep the Barclaycard although I am unsure how long this one will keep going
  • Morning,

I had an AMEX card which I used for the free £50 voucher.. I tend to still use this for my day to day expenses over the month and always pay off in full. It hasn't taken me long to build up my points again and hopefully will be able to cash in for another voucher in the future.

I'd use the other cards and put expenses on them, here and there just to keep them active. You don't have a vast amount of cards so a stable history would do you a favour.

    Hi

Thanks for your response, I think that might be the best option, use the AMEX as much as possible but have the Barclaycard one as backup, unless the decide to get rid of
