Hmrc letters redirection

Hi

I need to get an urgent advice. Does Royal Mail Re-Directs letters such as HMRC , DVLA or dwp to a New address ? I expect some letters from HMRC but I have shifted the place and am staying temporarily till I get a permanent place .

When I called HMRC ,was told that they already posted letters to my old address. Please help

They only re-direct your mail if you pay for this to be done, otherwise no. Have you reported a change of address, if not then you do need to do this.

Assuming you have set up the redirect then all post should be forwarded to the new address. Some may slip through the system. I'd speak to HMRC and see if they will accept your new address details over the phone.

Can't you set up an online tax account and do it that way?

Lots of things from the DWP I've received have 'do not redirect' on them - they'll be sent back to them, even if you have a redirection set up with Royal Mail. It's a measure to prevent benefit fraud, so you can't claim housing benefit for a place you're not actually living in, for example. Can't remember off the top of my head if it's all post from them or just things related to HB, it's been a while since I got mail from them!

Royal Mail do not redirect post from DWP, HMRC or any government department.

Don't know about DVLA but think they are included in the ban which think they agreed with the government several years ago.

Think it was originally introduced to combat benefit fraud and suchlike and think it also has words to say no redirects to such organisations on the redirect forms you have to fill in.

Yes, they do redirect HMRC letters. I run an accountancy practice, and yes, our clients do get their letters redirected if they've paid for the redirection service. It's one of the things we recommend as soon as a client tells us they're moving.

We also got loads of HMRC letters redirected when we moved our own offices - that amounted to hundreds of their letters over a 12 month period.

It's just certain "high risk" letters that aren't, such as council tax bills, which have "do not redirect" written on the envelopes so Royal Mail know to return them to sender.

    Pennywise, I beg to differ.

I based my comment on the fact that RM did indeed return to sender 2 letters from HMRC addressed to me at an old address - sent there after HMRC had been notified of new address - while still within the 12 months paid for redirect period.

That's what HMRC themselves told me, so could be an isolated case.

Council tax bills have never been 'do not redirect' - it's so they get any reminders etc at the new property.
Sometimes the postie puts a sticker on the envelope and it gets returned then it's chasing time

Benefit letters used to have a DNR on but that ceased at my council many years ago as it was too costly to justify

Certainly in our area they are, indeed the envelopes have a special green chevron border to indicate the DNR status.

Yep, that's exactly the case in my area too.
