historic vehicle class V5 sorn

It would appear that when updating a V5 for a vehicle to become 'Historic taxed' the DVLA automatically tax the vehicle at same time, so if you have no insurance in place you may well receive a fine from MID (Motor Insurance Database) for having no insurance. So if you change status to Historic you need to immediately renew SORN if you do not want to put it on the road

cant link to the magazine , but i have read it , dont get caught out

It's the other way round. You change the tax class at the time you tax it...

After all, if you aren't taxing it, it makes no difference if it's £0 or £155/255, does it?
  • "when updating a V5 for a vehicle to become 'Historic taxed'" this can be done ANYTIME after he date has passed

many vehicles are not on the road , and many many more are garaged over winter

the statement was that the DVLA WILL automatically tax the vehicle , even if you do not want it taxing , as there is no bill to pay , you do not notice

until you get a fine for no insurance

I know what the statement was, and you had it the wrong way round. You go to a post office, you present the documentation needed to tax the vehicle, you tax it... and simultaneously change the tax class on the V5C.

This is not unique to going from PLG to Historic - VED class changes are always done at the time of taxing a vehicle.

There is zero point in changing the tax class on a vehicle while it's SORN and being kept SORN.

You're right that you need to then cancel the tax and re-SORN it if you don't want it taxed (and therefore need insurance). You simply have the reasoning the wrong way round.
