Renting & Damp

Options
So I've been in my rented flat for just over 2 years and there are two walls (both outside) that are constantly damp at the bottom. Bleach will not remove it and the paint is starting to peel off on one.

The letting agents inspect the property annually so I have made them aware of it. But I plan to move out next year so will I be liable for this ?

The heating is on for an hour in the morning and 4 hours in the evening when it's cold but not blasting out. I have the windows open as much as I can but I obviously don't have them open when i'm home in the winter with the heating on or when i'm out as break in's are a regular thing in my area.
As i'm renting I am loathe to spend money putting this right, but don't want to lose my deposit when I move out ?

When did you first report thE damp issue to your landlord in writng?
  • I don't think I have ever rented somewhere without damp and I used to take a diligent approach to cleaning effected areas weekly. But I have found so many landlords just paint over damp to make it temporarily 'go away' rather than deal with the cause which makes the problem ten times worse and difficult for tenant.

I just found an area like this in our current rental and I have already decided I am just gonna re-paint over the problem when I move because if they don't care why should I!

Although in my case I moved in September and hope to be handing in notice next week so we won't have been here that long.

And how many times have you followed up in writing?

And why have you not requested the damp be sorted in writing?

    and have you read:

I first advised them in writing in June just before the inspection and they acknowledged it in an email back to me a week or so later so this will be the second time of mentioning it

Regularly using bleach can increase the amount of moisture in the wall. Use a mold remover which leaves a fungiside on the wall.
