SD signals would look worse on new (larger?) TVs for some reason.

Zoom in on a photo, eventually it'll run out of detail. Same for SD. Looked fine on a 20" TV, but 'zoom in' and put it on a 32 inch TV, and you can see the any flaws better. Make it sharper with HD, and you'll notice the improvement better too.

Since you're talking about Freeview it's easy:
    Channels 1,2,3,4,5 are SD channels
    The HD channels start at 101 - 102, 103, 104, 105 etc.
I do wonder how many people are watching SD channels on their lovely HDTVs.

I have noticed on my Sky Q box Ch101 is BBC HD but on Ch102 its BBC2 SD

Have to scroll down to ch 115 to get BBC2 HD

Why is this? There seems no way to change channel numbers except by adding to favourites
Ask Sky. I have never understood their numbering.

Since most channels on Freeview, freesat and even sky

are SD then I guess 99+% at some time

OP....SD will look fine on your new TV.....The picture will be softer than HD, but perfectly watchable as long as you buy a decent TV with decent upscaling.
Be realistic about the TV size and don't get sucked into the 'mines bigger than yours' discussion.

    I have checked!

    In my region its
    ch101 BBC1 HD
    Ch102 is BBC2 SD
    Ch 115 BBC2 HD
Exactly what it is (and should be) on my box.
This is true in the Nations (Scotland, Ireland and Wales)... or was up until yesterday 29th November...

In England 101 is the local English region in SD, 102 BBC TWO England HD.

In Wales now 101 is BBC ONE Wales HD and 102 BBC TWO Wales HD.

I have a 49in LG 4K tv and it certainly upscales the SD and even the HD pictures but whether you can see the difference could depend on how good your eyes are as if you are like me with age my eyes clouded over with cararacts and only after getting them fixed can I appreciate the difference.
If you do get a 4K tv for the future although there is no content on Freeview, you can find 4K content on Youtube that is available via the internet on a smart tv. BBC iplayer also showed some of the world cup in 4K. But if you do a bit of digging the experts say its not worth having 4K on a set less than 49ins.

unless your are going to buy a cheap badged TV, the argument pointless as the main manufacturers are producing 4K TV's as standard. So advising someone not to bother with 4K, at any size and for any reason, is an old argument that has little place today.
