High value jewellery - travel insurance

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could assist with an insurance question

My fiance and I are taking a little career break and going travelling for a few months (Central and North America) and I'm trying to sort out insurance but facing a few issues.

Several travel insurance companies/policies will cover the length and type of trip but have a limit on the high value items that is below the engagement ring value. It is fine for things like phones, ipad but not the ring

I have the ring insured on contents insurance which covers outside of the house and worldwide, which is fine, but only for being away for 60 days maximum - which is not long enough.

So I'm stuck between the two types of insurance. Does anyone know travel insurance brokers that will cover this or somewhere I can just insure the ring specifically worldwide and then have a normal travel insurance policy?

Hopefully someone out there knows.

Thanks

Jamie

  • Try insuring the ring on its own jewellery policy.

Leave it at home, if she wants to signify that she's engaged buy a cheap one to wear when travelling. It's what I do with my watch.
  • I agree with agrinnall - in fact I wouldn't even bother with a cheap one. The fewer displays of wealth the better - even if you know it was a cheap one, the person trying to take it won't know that.

Leave it at home either in a safe deposit box with your bank, or with a trusted relative.
I never take my engagement ring with me when I'm travelling - I've lost enough earrings to know how easy it is to leave something behind on the bedside table of the hotel room.

We have "travelling rings" - cheap silver bands and that's what we use when we go on a backpacking type trip or somewhere more adventures than a simple euro city break... not worth the risk

I'd not want to take anything valuable, or sentimental, on a bit of a shuffle round some really foreign countries... you've no idea where you'll be - and if you're packing/unpacking a lot it's easy to lose things, especially if they were "tucked away for safety".

Get a £10 shiny ring from a cheap local shop/marketstall for the trip .... and leave the proper one at home.
  • Do you know any good providers? Ive struggled to find one that doesn't make me enter into a whole contents policy which I already have
  • Thanks for all the replies - so to add a bit more context (probably should have done this before), we are going to elope with immediate family in our last destination, California. So we want the ring for that as well be having the wedding. So I think we'll leave it at home for the first part of the trip, especially based on the advice above. Does anyone know a provider that could insure it for that 6 week spell?

Does your 60 day home contents cover not work for that?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • I dont think so because me and my fiance will have been out of the country for 60 days, even if the jewellery isnt. I can double check the policy but pretty sure if were out of the country for longer its not covered
