EON Increased Direct Debit

We have dual fuel with EON and were paying £34 per month. We have smart meters and I've just had an email saying that our DD is increasing to £99 per month, which is ridiculous.

The exit fee for the account is £60. Has anyone got any advice as to what to do?

Thank you

What is the bottom line on your last bill ? Are you in debit or credit ?
What is your consumption (in kwh) ?

£34 sounds staggering low - nearly half of this will be standing charges.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

    Good morning Chris91,

Thank you Robin9, I agree we need a bit more information really.

I can give a bit of general advice about how this should work.

When paying by Direct Debit, the idea is you reach a zero balance at your annual review. That means you only pay what you need to for the energy you’re using.

To make sure you’re always on track, we review your payments on a regular basis. You can also review them yourself online using our Direct Debit Manager tool. (via your online account)

You’ll also have one annual review every year; this is the end point of each Direct Debit cycle.

As we are increasing your payments it sounds like you're not paying enough to cover the usage.

Or have you changed on to different tariff? They may have higer prices. You can check you're on the best tariff for you also via the website.

If you can let us know the answers to Robin9 questions, I can help a bit more.

    Thank you

£34 is unfeasibly low, I'm guessing that it should have been nearer £70-£80 so you are probably having to pay back some arrears. In fact I'm guessing that most people dont pay much less ttan £80 a month nowadays.

You really need to be checking your bills and readings yourself even though you've got a smart meter. They aren't infallible and if you dont check you wont know what's going on.

Checking your bills & readings every month would have alerted you to the fact that your DD probably wasn't paying for your consumption and that some arrears were beginning to build.

Quickly putting your annual consumptions through CEC - you will be paying over £500 for gas and £350 for electric.

As it has been said you should have been paying £70 a month.

To convert you gas meter consumption multiply by approx 11.1 to get kwh

There are some estimated readings in there - it looks like the meters are no longer Smart and you must submit your pwn readings at least monthly.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

It looks like the OP had the smart meters installed on the 2nd October as all the readings from that date are actual reading and the meters both start from zero on that day.

Your new direct debit also includes paying back the money you owe for the time when it was set way too low. £186 debit in just over two months with 2 payments from yourself of £34 each, leaves £112 to be repaid via the increased DD.
So it is naturally great than just paying for new energy consumed going forward.

The smart meters were installed around 2nd October. We only moved into the property on 1st September ish.

Is there anything I can do to reduce that monthly payment?

I was under the impression that my Direct Debit would be changed according to what energy I used because I have a smart meter
  • The DD has been changed to match your usage (the energy used will be increasing as winter progresses) and repay your debt.
You could pay off the debt in a lump sum payment and then reduce the DD downwards.
E.ON allow you to change the DD online by a certain amount up or down. Of course, it is limited to ensure that you don't get into more debt.
