BODMAS always applies, and what it means is:

IF there are brackets, work out what's inside the brackets first.
If there are NO brackets go onto the next bit.
IF there are Orders(Powers), work them out next
If there are NO Orders go onto the next bit
IF there are Multiplications or Divisions, do them next
If there are no Multiplications or Divisions go onto the next bit
Finally do any Additions or Subtractions.

So, the result MUST always be the same answer - regardless of whether they are enclosed in brackets or not, Multiplication and Division is ALWAYS done before Addition or Subtraction. You would use brackets to SEPARATE the functions such as

(3+1)*2 = 4*2 = 8
as opposed to
3+1*2 = 3*2 = 6
