Is applying for an overdraft a hard search on your credit file

If I already have a current account with no overdraft and I apply for the overdraft is this a hard search?
Applying for a credit card leaves a hard search on your credit file
Whereas Using an eligibility checker only leaves a soft search
What would this fall into? TIA

Depends on the lender and your account conduct.
It's probably more common that they'll be able to make a decision without a CRA check.0 -
last few increases on my overdraft have not left any hard searches.... banking with Nationwide0

Similar situation banking with Lloyds - I had a hard search when I initially opened the account (even though I didn't apply for an overdraft), but when I changed my mind 12 months later and applied for an overdraft, they were able to do it all internally without a second hard search. It may depend on the policy of the banks you are with however.
On the topic of hard/soft searches - soft searches are typically reserved for eligibility, identity or quotation searches/checks and are not seen by lenders. Hard searches are typically from the results of credit applications - current accounts, credit cards, loans, mortgages etc, and remain visible on your files for 12 months regardless of if you were successful or not.0 -
Based on my experience, HSBC will do a hard search for applying overdraft.0
