Insurance lower with Parent on Policy

Hi,

Firstly forgive me if this is in the wrong section......

I am currently insured on my own policy with just myself as the sole name on there. I have done a quick price comparison on the usual sites and adding my stepdad with many many years experience reduces the overall cost by about £120 a year.

I have taken out my current policy in the summer of this year. Can I just ring up and request my stepdad to be put onto my policy and will this lead to a immidate reduction in monthly cost?

Many Thanks

  • Ring them and ask them. Some insurers will charge an admin fee for policy changes in-year, which may negate any premium reduction. Also, you will only get a change to reflect the part of the year he would be on the policy. Ask them to tell you what it would save and cost.

Maybe. Depends on the terms of the policy you signed up for.

If you scraped the bottom of the barell for the cheapest it may cost more in costs for just doing that!

You could ring up and say you were just wondering how much it would cost to do such a thing, they may tell you.

Adding me to my daughters policy increased the premium.

Adding a female relative decreased the premium, even if that person had claims. Daft or what.

There's no difference in male/female anymore, it's illegal to price on gender.

It will depend on which way the wind is blowing, if a 3-headed goat is born, the moon becomes red, and....whatever else the particular insurance company prices risk on on that day....

  • I added my other half as a named driver on my insurance policy mid way through the period of insurance and received a refund of about 10% but that was done on line and some kind of administration charge may well have been levied if I had rung them up.

So they say, but adding a male grandparent increases the premium and adding a female grandparent reduces the premium.

Adding myself increased the premium, adding my younger sister with less experience and 3 accidents to declare reduced the premium.

Adding my sister to my policy would have reduced it also. Not convinced the sexual equality works so well in practice.
