EON fixed tariff.
My housemate sorted the bills out for the current house we're living in and picked up a fixed year tariff. We are paying £43 a month and have been for around 15 months. An EON guy came for a meter reading a couple of weeks ago and suddenly we've been slapped with a £4,000 bill. My housemate was under the impression it was £43 fixed price and they cant charge more which in hindsight seems ridiculous and is more likely the price per unit that's fixed. So, do we have any options here other than having to set up a lengthy direct debit to clear the debt?

The fixed part is just the cost per kWh of the fuel and the standing charges.
There hasn't been an all you can eat energy tariff for a long time.
The direct debit is just a payment on account which is taken from the bill when it is produced.
Check that the bill is accurate and that the meter readings are correct.
And get into the habit of sending monthly meter readings and checking how much money E.ON says you have spent. (With E.ON you can send weekly readings if you wish as they allow 52 customer readings a year)

Only the first 12 months would have been fixed - the last 3 months would have been at at their standard tariff rates (ie expensive). Did your flatmate note get an email saying the fixed tariff was coming to an end ?
Had you been reading your meters you would have known after the first month that the DD didn't meet the cost.
PS You have paid about £600 out of £4600. £4600 in 15 months is £300 a month - what on earth are you using your energy for ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
£4000 plus your £645 of direct debit payments is very high for 15 months of energy consumption. £1700 would be more typical. Did you submit any meter readings in this time? What did you do at the end of the one year fix? What is the annual consumption that EON are advising you?0
