No offence meant as there s useful info here but Vanoonoo's very long SHTF threads covered very different subjects and everyone was free to add thier ideas and advice .I cancelled my daily newspaper delivery probably 10 years ago. Mainstream media can and does distort facts even in a pandemic.I'm similar to Floss thinking of those who can't do big shops and stock up on lots of things. I find someone having two allotments and a garden odd. OK they leave excess produce for others to help themselves to but there are very long waiting lists for allotments in the UK. Growing your own and connecting with nature is priceless especially for good mental health.I was following this thread but to be honest it's become a bit my way or the highway so I agree with Mar.pollyxIt is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.

Polly, there is indeed a tremendous shortage of allotment space overall, especially in & around the cities. But elsewhere, there is a crying need for vacant plots to be filled & used or cash-strapped councils will see an opportunity to raise some money & will sell them off for building land, which will of course be covered with executive residences that no-one local can afford; it's happened here. It's no good saying to someone stuck in central London that they can have a plot in rural Dorset or Yorkshire. I'd love to have a second plot (and I do also have a garden) & would like to think I'd use it well, as I never seem to have enough space, but I'd like it even better if someone started a campaign for everyone everywhere to have real access to outdoor space, for growing or even just for sitting in, according to their needs & inclinations. I really felt for those poor mums stuck in high-rises during the full lockdown, but giving up some of the space I'm lucky enough to be able to access would only have benefitted some fat-cat developer.
I'm sure flats used to be built with balconies; I remember seeing washing hanging from them, and some were covered in plants, and some with wire mesh to keep children or pets from clambering over, but that seems to have gone by the board now & they're just steel & concrete towers. I wonder why? Profit margins? Safety concerns? The good old British weather?Angie - GC Jul 25: £225.85/£500 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)14 -
I fetched some pots and some trellis from someone who was giving them away today who said she's given up aplot recently after only having it for six months because she just couldn't keep on top of the weeds, it was infested with marestail, ground elder etc.Hugh Fernley did a thing a good few years ago now about growing in urban spaces and there was a website where you could ask for space or donate some space. Wonder what happened to that....Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi12

Gotta love that man!Re prepping - I have a little more space in the Room of Doom as we've used up 2 of the 4 tins of spuds I bought when there was a rumour that they would be in short supply. I've never bought tinned spuds before in my life!
The only time I use canned spuds is in Corned Beef hash. Then it's lovely.
How did you use yours?11 -
Yes, instant mash is good when used as a thickener in soups or stews, you don't get that floury taste that you get with, well, flour!
I remember on the old SHTF threads Kitty used to be an interesting poster, covering all sorts of subjects. There was certainly a general good atmosphere on those threads most of the time. One life - your life - live it!18 -
I think Kittie and many others are much missed Nargle. Unknown to either of us for a long time we were both living not too far away from each other, involved in food cooperatives and cooking from the original Cranks cookbooks. Those threads were a source of much knowledge and laughs. I'm pretty sure Mar's hand knitted armada and at least one Discworld heffalump started there. There was so much pooled knowledge on everything from storing water, outdoor stoves, solar lamps etc. It was down to earth, practical and very supportive.I'm quite sorry I never pinned it when it was being closed. It was strange a newbie with a handful of posts managed to get it closed.I used to keep some Mr Mash in the store cupboard, it was the only one I ever found that was like real mash. Mixed with butter, loads of grated red leicester or chedder and topped with sliced tomatoes then grilled it was cheap , quick and tasty and was good served with whatever green veg was ready to eat.It must be 5 or 6 years since I saw it in a shop. I'd gone into Home Bargains for lightbulbs and emerged with many boxes of Mr Mash.pollyxIt is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.

Kittie got me into prepping, I owe her a lot.Instant mash makes lovely duchesse potatoes - add an egg then put in the oven.17
