Unwashed potatoes keep much longer than washed potatoes in my experience. In a cool, frost free, dark place they keep months. Unfortunately they seem harder to find. Plenty of washed varieties in a farm shop but only one unwashed, an not my first choice variety either but in the current situation some potatoes better than no potatoes. Have we become a nation unable to wash potatoes?

So, if you send christmas cards, you might want to consider sending them early this year. Had no post for a week on our estate, and what has just been delivered wasn't by our usual postie. So, my assumption is that they are having quite a lot of staff shortages due to self isolation and likely disruption around the country.

My MIL swears blind it's cheaper to buy small bags of clean potatoes than the 20kg bags we buy of unwashed potatoes because "you're just paying for the mud" 🙄littlemoney said:Unwashed potatoes keep much longer than washed potatoes in my experience. Well, unless you have to break the potatoes out of their individual 2" thick globes of mud, I really don't think she's right

It's kind of the same argument as maintaining it's cheaper to buy packs of skinless chicken breasts because "there's no waste". (And to be fair, the rest of the chicken probably doesn't go to waste - pet food, baby food etc. - but you the consumer don't get the benefit of it.) Basically, she's happier to pay for someone else to wash them & bag them. I'm paying £8 for a 25Kg sack of Wiljas ATM, which aren't at all muddy; at my nearest supermarket (ok, that's W8rose) their cheapest are £1.50 for 2.5kg, which equates to £15 for a 25Kg sack. There'd have to be a LOT of mud to even it up. Mind you, it's only a bargain if you can actually eat them before they go downhill, and a single person might well struggle to do that, or to store them well.CCW007 said:

I sent my partner over the garage to buy enough spuds to do a roast while he was here, and he came back with a 25kg sack for £4 ..... now I have to figure out the best way to store/prep and freeze a load, as I rarely eat carbs lolthriftwizard said:

Daz When I had shoulder impingement last year I found that one set of exercises actually made it worse, so the physioterrorist gave me different ones instead.16

Cornishchick, if they're anything like the amazing bunch of carrots I bought for £1 at a garage whilst camping on The Lizard this September, I envy you... our garages just sell chocolate, posh coffee and sarnies!Angie - GC Oct 25: £438.21/£500: 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 40/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)14
