Travel Insurance Overlap

I'm currently trying to organise some travel insurance for a 33-day trip this December, but it's proving to be rather expensive. Part of the expense is the need to declare pre-existing conditions, which is fine, but there appears to be a bit of a price hike when you want cover for trips longer than 31 days. My quote from Norwich Union jumped from £120 to £190, just by changing the maximum trip length from 31 to 45 days.

I asked the Norwich Union man what would happen for trips over 31 days (if we only got the 31-day policy) and he said that we'd only be covered for the first 31 days. So, this leads to my theory - can we just get the 31-day cover and then get an additional 2-day single trip policy to cover us for the last two days of the holiday? What are the consequences or considerations of doing this?

Thanks for your help. :)

Pretty dire, I suspect ..... in the event you need to make a claim.

I doubt very much that Norwich Union would support their stated logic in the event you made a claim. And you wouldn't stand the remotest chance with the 2 day policy - which turns out to be days 32/33 !!

Don't really think you've thought it through? In this case isn't there cover offered by the holiday provider and which may be cheaper than a single trip policy?
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
  • Hi Mike, thanks for your comments. I thought it sounded a bit messy, myself, but I've since found a more suitable price and it's no longer an issue. :)

some annual travel insurance policies cover trips from 45-60 days...

columbus direct have an annual super policy with a max of 60 days abroad. they are good about covering pre-existing conditions with a reasonable amount added, and you can get a 20% discount using the code from www.responsibletravel.com

have you looked at the pre-existing conditions thread? there are some suggestions for other companies there.
  • I got a decent quote from Columbus Direct, although they have been experiencing email problems and couldn't send over details of the policy until today, whereas I had to book yesterday. In the end, I got a reasonable deal with https://www.covermytravel.co.uk.
