day or night?

Options
I am on economy 7 with EDF. I have storage heaters which are not individually timed. I noticed that from midnight to 1am the rate switches to the expensive day rate. does this mean that my heating and hot water are being metered for the day rate at night?

Economy 7 means 7 hours cheap rate.

You say the rate switches for 1 hour from midnight to 1a.m. and goes to day rate for that hour.

Yes, if that is what it does then whatever is turned on in that hour will be charged at the day rate, but are you sure of the timings?

If you are correct then you need to moan to your supplier about it but you may have some trouble convincing them you are right about your observation.

I believe E7 customers in certain south east parts have a split night rate.

It's an advantage, as you can do the ironing before bed & warm your bedrooms. Also the storage heaters will work slightly better, as the charging is spread over a longer period.

Is your timeswitch an old mechanical type ? These have been know to drift out of time by considerable amounts.

What are the other times on this timeswitch ?

Can you see the meter itself switch from one register to another ? There may be an arrow pointing to 1 or 2 or from day to night.

Some areas, notably SE England and N Scotland, do have split E7 timings. As long as your heaters are connected directly to the E7 only side of the board they will only charge during the off peak hours.
