So next year he offsets the HMRC fine against his tax liability.........0 -
Pleased to read council is chasing down those trying to wriggle out of their clear obligation to pay tax.
Remember, you can go to jail for council tax debt!0 -

This may get you off the hook.
If you can claim empty property relief (used to be allowed for 12 months) then you won't have owed any council tax. If the council agree on this, then the fact you don't owe any council tax means that no penalties will be enforced. The council will take the debt back off the debt collectors and zero balance the account. I don't know if the debt collectors get paid from the council or not, but that is a matter between them and the council and isn't your problem.
I've had to deal with similar over students who weren't technically students over a Summer break between courses, after some discussion the council agreed on the tenancy detail and took the case back from the debt collectors and we didn't owe anything.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. True. Which is why you may try to get the council to accept a payment for the council tax (if due, see my previous post) and then deal with the debt collectors separately.
I had a thread on this ages ago. Will try and find it.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Thanks all. What's done is done now, live and learn and all that.
It was unfurnished but I asked Nottingham City Council previously and they said that there's no discount.0
