BMW Brake Pad sensors

Can I ask what is the point of them?
I thought the sensor was there to tell you when the pads need changing, but, it seems the obc just counts down from a set number. The sensor seems redundant.
I had new pads and sensor fitted a couple of months ago and now the dash is saying new pads needed. Loads left on the pad so am wondering what the point of the sensor is?
I can't reset the service indicator, I get to the menu and it looks like its resetting but it doesn't. So a trip to the garage is required.
