pay as you go electric meter wrong key

HI all,

I have changed my electric supplier back in march for my tenant (with them agreeing) to sse but have not received any electric key for the meter. The tenant did not notify me of that and have continue used their old key for the past few months. I only realised until recently and tried to call SSE, but they say there has been a payment back in march but none after. I wonder what I should do to proceed? Do I need to pay for the past few months electricity even though my tenant has been paying with the wrong key? What do I need to do to settle both accounts?

Many thanks in advance:beer:

  • is the supply in your name or the tenant's name?
  • the previous supplier is in the tenant's name and the new supplier is under my name
  • first thing , get power / gas transferred to tenants , not you , mistakes like this are there responsibility not yours , fuddling or meter breaking "hot wiring" etc etc are down to them , not you

SSE can claim Misdirected payments from the industry. It will help them if you get a receipt from the Tenant once he has topped up his meter. You should not need to pay it again. If he has been paying the old suppliers rates on the meter it may mean there will be a discrepancy in how much has been collected once SSE bill the account. He should use SSE 's key asap. They can give you a code or send a key out.

  • @twhitehousescat this is not the tenant's fault, but my fault as I initiated this. Is it correct that I need to ask the tenant to register the meter under their name? Has it got to be in SSE?

@Joyful Even though there is no receipt (since it has been a few months), if I have the tenant account and name, will they be able to claim them via misdirected payment? I still need SSE to send the new key though so I need to contact them.

Should the situation be asking the tenant to register with SSE directly? How can my tenant ask SSE to claim via misdirected payment?

The tenant has been topping up on the previous suppliers key up until now so should have a recent receipt. If not get him to make a top up and keep the receipt. This will allow SSE to trace the missing payments that they have not received. all the payments go through a company called Itron and they will me able to say where the payments are. Once you get it sorted, you should always have your tenants names on the energy accounts, especially if there are young, old or disabled residents in situ.

  • @Joyful Thanks you for your advice. I will try to get the tenant registered in that case and ask them to keep one of the receipt.

sorry for being hard on you ,

recently I went thru a situation , moved out of rented (pre pay) landlord did renovation , but smashed meters , over 12-18 mths before he reported fault , EON billed me almost 5 yrs later and set lowells on me

fortunately someone at Eon admitted that I had rung up with final readings on leaving say

caused me a lot of grief and agro https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5884390/eon-lowell-ombudsman-update
  • I hope it won't be that bad. I did consider if in the worse case scenario, it may be a few hundred pound bill. I will try to contact SSE regarding the issue and see what they say Then get the tenant to change it over to their name and hopefully SSE will be able to trace back the fund.:wall::wall:
