Maybe I'll look into Petplan before i jump into anything else, they seem a better insurer

Remember pre existing conditions or anything that can be related to them are excluded when you start a new policy.

Diseases are contagious, so that logic doesn't work.
If all your pets are sick, do you really want to chose which you can afford to treat?

    Self insurance is a myth.
If you're rich enough to pay the maximum claim for all of your pets every year, then you are rich and don't need insurance.

If you can't afford it to pay that out every year, you are just kidding yourself by putting a few hundred / thousand in a savings account.

How is it a myth? My sister has had 3 cats for 5 years. She now has almost £4000 in a savings account that would have been spent on premiums. Even if one needs a serious operation she'll almost certainly still be better off.

And come off it! How many claims are for infectious diseases!? An insignificant number in context.

An anecdote of one person is not relevant, but she can be thankful she's been lucky so far. Two operations and that £4k is gone. I don't know about cats, but if a dog had arthritis that would require two separate operations, one on each side. Some sort of accident could easily require two operations.

More likely it will all be whittled away by long term treatment needed by old animals.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.
