Homeowner or private tenant

When we purchased our house 3 years ago I had just started my own business so the mortgage adviser advised us to only have my wife on the mortgage application. We went along with this so the mortgage is solely in her name. We both contribute equally to the mortgage and all household outgoings but I having just taken out our new buildings and contents cover one of the questions asked was are you a homeowner or private tenant. I chose private tenant but I'm really not sure this is correct as I quite obviously have no tenancy agreement with my wife!

Does anyone have an inkling what my official status would be classed as?

Thanks in advance.

Why not take it out in your wife's name? (Who pays is irrelevant, if it's in her name then she can truthfully answer as homeowner).

You are not a tenant, unless you have a very odd relationship with your wife. The insurance should be in your wife's name. She is a homeowner. The policy will (probably) cover your own contents too assuming your existence is declared to the insurers, though she might want to check.

You and your wife are home owners.

But if in doubt why is your wife not taking out the policy, in her name, to protect her property?
  • Whoops! You're right and the previous two policies have been in her name. I went on line to get the various quotes this time as I had more time and to be honest I just never thought about that fact as we previously had a joint mortgage!

    I've quite obviously had a dumb moment...:embarasse:embarasse

But on the plus side at least I've had an answer to the question and know I'm still classed as a homeowner.
