What benefits to claim when injury occurs?

Hi all,
My brother fell down the stairs last week and basically has a broken his spine and won't be able to work for at least six weeks while he recovers, IF he recovers at all. Thing is, he lost his job almost three weeks ago, so this couldn't have come at a worse time.
His partner works full time, earns a very good wage, but not good enough to keep him, and their kid and pay the bills/mortgage/child care etc etc for the foreseeable future. He has no savings and poor credit so living on loans isn't an option and family can't/won't help. His partner has just spent all her savings as they bought a house in October, thinking they were both well situated with their jobs/lives etc.
Can anyone tell me what benefits he may be entitled to?
It's a week in and already they are really struggling financially and having done calculations he and his partner don't know how they're going to survive without the second income. They will also lose childcare hours in January if he doesn't have a job, which means his partner will have to reduce hours to care for their kid as he won't be able to do it alone....
Any help would be hugely appreciated. Thanks all!

First of all is he in a Universal Credit area

Are they getting tax credits?
Has he got a NI contribution history that would mean he could apply for Contribution based (or New style) ESA
