blocked p trap gully

Hi All,

Had a new waste installed from the kitchen sink/roof drainage into a new pipework along the back of the house about 4 months ago.
The drain i discovered was blocked and full of old sinkerator food waste (see bucket)

I`m assuming the builders shouldve put in some kind of grate to stop leaves getting in but apart from that isnt this always going to get blocked if it has to go uphill into the main drain?
thanks

Very, very badly done. Yes, a grate should have been fitted and the downpipe terminated correctly. As it currently stands, there is a very good chance that you will suffer from penetrating damp and even subsidence if the downpipe is not fixed.

Looking at the picture again, it looks like just a P trap and the outfall is higher than the open hole. Water is going to overflow and you'll get a real nice stinky mess come the summer. A gully trap would have been more appropriate, or even a bottle trap.

ok thanks, yes its a 45degree p trap i think and yes overflowed with mess all round there. cleaned out half a bucket of food particles.

would something like this fix the issue? and have the down pipe directed into it along with the sink waste?

Something like that (a square hopper) would do the job.

If you can avoid putting food waste down the drain, that will help to reduce the smells emanating from the area. Some councils provide a separate recycle bin for food waste.

ok thanks, we bought a sinkerator to make a lives a bit easier and just have it flush down the waste pipe. maybe this kind of drain isnt a good idea with that setup?
