Good/Bad Balance Transfer Credit Limits?

What sort of credit limits are people getting for Balance Transfers?

I know this is going to depend A LOT on personal circumstances but I am looking to do a BT and wanted to know if any cards give higher credit limits for BTs than others?

I have a decent Credit Score and was looking at the Santander Everyday Credit Card, hoping to get around 6/7k but I guess BT credit cards give lower than usual credit limits.

Anyone been given particularly good/bad limits? Trying to figure out which to go for and which to avoid.

  • BT cards tend to give higher than average limits as they are for people with better credit histories (not scores).

MBNA and Barclaycard tend to give higher limits than others anecdotally, but it depends on your circumstances.

I actually have an empty MBNA card, I've had it for years and has a 13k limit but I don't want to use it as the BT rate is 3.9% APR at the moment. So that's why I'm looking to find a good one with 0% with low or nil fee.

I have a Barclays Bank account so may be worth checking - I just wondered if anyone was pleased/disappointed with the Credit Limits they were given. :)
  • No one knows and all personal circumstances are different.

You won’t find out until you apply and are accepted for a card what limit you’ll get

Yep I understand that - I wouldn't expect anyone to tell me what I would get :) just asking for any experiences other people may have had, for example, someone may have had a good credit report but still had a low CL given with a particular bank, or vice versa.
  • FYI, I've just got a Sainsbury's 26 month 0% interest, fee free with a £12k limit

Highest BT limit offered to date was £18k from Barclaycard- Tesco only let me have £4k. Virgin and Amex have also been quite generous.

Virgin were trying to build market share and gave me a high limit on a BT card. 10 months later I applied again and got a purchases card with a reasonable limit. They may have a reduced appetite for risk now they are tying up with Clydesdale.

Lenders are generally pulling back a bit because of uncertainty about the economy and high levels of consumer debt. I don't think you'll get much fee-free.
