How to get more MPG out of a Ford Fiesta Ecoboost

Whoever mentioned an eco mode button, where is it? Does it exist on an Ecoboost car?

In which case you won't be getting the best economy

You're probably right, but as Adrian as previously said, economy is really a very minor part of running costs on a car (maybe that's not the case with a lorry) so driveability is a bigger factor for me. I'd rather be somewhere in the powerband where the engine will respond if needed than be labouring off the turbo to save a teaspoon of fuel.

Depends on the age but an upwards arrow will appear on the central display when it thinks you should change up. On my first Fiesta (2012) this was quite large and intrusive but on the current one it's smaller and less in your face, probably as a result of customer feedback.

If you have one the eco button is next to the button to turn off stop/start. I think my car must have been among the first to be fitted with it because it's not mentioned in the manual and the salesman had no idea it was there. When I tried it for a while I could see no obvious difference, so I turned it off and have never touched it again.
  • Thanks. I wondered what the arrow was! I was going to google it but now I have my answer :)
I don’t think my car has an eco button. Looks like it is available on newer models only, although I’ll have a look tomorrow just in case. I’m sure I’d have noticed it if it was there.

I forgot to say in my previous post that my current car is a 2015 model (65 reg), so if yours is earlier than that, or even earlier in 2015, it may well not have the eco button.

OP, if you're using it for work, I'd support the clearing the boot out suggestion. I use my fiesta (09 plate) for work and often forget to empty my work clobber out when I'm going home. Not sure about the fuel tank size, but might be worth considering how much you fuel it up - extra fuel is extra weight. Obviously if you are miles from a choice of petrol stations, not a good idea as you might end up paying more for petrol. I tend to fill mine up to about half way but I can get to cheap petrol stations fairly easy when the '50 miles to go' warning comes up. I also don't use air-con much when I'm working as it's usually short journeys between visits. My rather old now Fiesta does about 45mpg city driving, but I can eek it up to 60mpg on the motorway.

When you are wanting economy you change gear at an entirely different time than when you're wanting perfomance. To get the best economy you need to have a high engine load so you change gear quite early, being in top gear before you get close to 50MPH. If you want performance you need to be changing gear up near the redline. Nobody teaches you this.

You dont need anywhere near the redline for performance on a diesel. Usually a waste of time going much past 3500rpm.
Usually you only go past that if the enxt gear drops you below the powerband in the next gear.

I did tests in my old car at 40mph. 40mph in 4th used less fuel than 40mph in 5th.

Not tried in my current car.

I’ve hope you’re car has the recall work done. You wouldn’t want your engine blowing up!
I would have thought a used Toyota Prius would be a much better option for city driving.
I read somewhere that aircon use in modern vehicles has minimal effect on mpg, you may as well be comfortable for the few pennies you would save.
I have a non turbo 1.0 208 that regularly carries 5 people with lots of short runs and stop start traffic and never get less than 45 mpg. You would think the car would be underpowered but is perfectly adequate with my driving style. I never take the car past 2000rpm and try to brake as little as possible by reading the reading the road ahead.
I reckon if I drove like most other people I would struggle to get 40 mpg.
  • Thanks all. I’d love a Prius or Auris Hybrid but can’t afford it at the moment; definitely to consider in future.
My car is 15 reg so doesn’t have an eco button sadly.
    Some very good suggestions there.
Can someone tell me at which point I should refuel? I’m not used to “50 miles to 0” gauge and the other day the light came on at 35, then next time it was 50. I find myself frantically looking for petrol stations as I don’t want it to run out of petrol but perhaps could happily drive for a further x amount of miles without worrying.
