The only time it has been weighed long haul is on really busy flights just before or after Christmas when everybody seems to be carrying triple their allowance.
Cathay Pacific were asking some passengers to put their hand luggage on the scales.
They didn't ask us though.
We have rucksacks that are clearly within maximum dimensions and lift them easily.
We carry just the one bag each.
Coats go into the bag if not being worn.
I've seen so much stuff left behind in Departures as passengers rush to get to the boarding gate that I keep it simple.
I think it's worth checking hand luggage rules (# of items/size/weight) before booking instead of after.
Or just assuming that the bag you took on airline 'a' will be fine on airline 'b'.0 -
The airlines keep all checks random for security reasons.
What pees me off is that at LGW and LHR for example, Check-in and Gate Staff are very thorough when it comes to Cabin Bags. Quite right to.
But get to Dubai for example, and change aircraft. Passengers checking in at Dubai often get allowed a lot more leeway with what they're allowed to take on the aircraft.
Of the Middle East hubs I think that Etihad are the pits when it comes to Cabin Bags. An what makes it worse is that the 'offenders' are usually outsized Arab men, who manage to get on the aircraft first to take up most of the overhead locker space.0 -
Another Emirates regular here for what it's worth. My experience is they usually don't check but sometimes they do. Is that any help?0

That's an awful lot too big. It will be spotted a mile off by someone that is used to bag sizes, and it's going to make it bigger than the maximum size that IATA advises. It will also mean that it doesn't fit in the overheads wheels first so would be taking up someone else's bag space.
Just use a bag that conforms to the airlines rules. It's really not hard, and it gives you peace of mind.0 -

Yep, it's random for Security reasons. Keeping changing routines is a good way of meeting that criteria.
Read the Baggage rules, read the T&Cs, and people shouldn't go wrong.....but they do, and then have a moan. No sympathy from this feller.0
