Ofgem appoints Scottish Power to take on customers of Extra Energy

Can we now expect loads of threads/posts about Scottish Power's fiasco caused by being saddled with Extra Energy's former customers?
Wonder if they are still rolling out their botched system upgrade as an excuse?0 -

I'm not sure I follow you when you say "by being saddled with Extra Energy's former customers?"
My take from the above link is that Scottish Power bidded to take on these customers in "a competitive process run by Ofgem".0 -
As an SP long standing customer, who was looking to switch to one of the small boys because SP’s tariffs are high, I am wondering if they are going to get higher because of this influx?
SP told me only yesterday, wait till early December, we usually bring new tariffs out, you May get a better tariff than what’s on offer now ?
Doubt that now.
The EE customers are going to be offered a “Good tariff,” say SP,I wonder if that will be available to long standing SP customers too, whatever it is.
EE are going to pay a lot more whatever the tariff is.
When I put my usage into EE the other week, it was £100 less then SP’s cheapest tariff!
Weird world, I quoted on here several times the big six only have to play the waiting game, and pick up the broken market customers who genuinely thought the grass is /was greener on the other side!
It is, till the s### hits the fan.
Here’s a few others who may be coming back to the big six.
“Spark Energy went bust on Friday with an outstanding green tax bill of £14.4million still to be paid to Ofgem. OVO is in negotiations to take on Spark’s 290,000 customers.
Ofgem revealed that Spark’s total bill for outstanding green taxes, or Renewable Obligations, is £58.6million.
Economy Energy, URE Energy and Eversmart have also been named by the regulator as firms struggling with their green tax payments.”
Strange, no mention of Oftm !!
Typo probably.
They can always re-switch of course, cannot see many paying SP prices, but I am staying with them now, for peace of mind.
You pays your money, you takes your chance.0 -
It is pretty much apparent that when we go for a smaller supplier to get cheaper energy it's only temporary and then customers will be transferred to bigger suppliers and pricier tariffs.
It's debatable whether Scottish Power will offer the same tariff it is offering to EE customers to its existing customers: Scottish Power did not allow me to switch to it's new Super Saver December 2019 tariff offered through comparison sites when I applied for it due to my current tariff ending in December 2018. So I switched to EDF which provided a £45 p.a. saving on the price of Fixed Price December 2019 tariff that SP were offering.
Let's look at the experience of Robin Hood Energy customers when RH agreed special tariffs for Ebico customers: Robin Hood's customers were then faced with an increase in prices. Whether that applies to SP remains to be seen. Probably the best advice for SP customers is "fix now".0 -

On the 12th I phoned SP, and asked what was their best deal they could offer me.
This was on their chat line.
They offered what was on their site only.
Online fixed dec 19.et.al
When I pressed, she said,
I could go to mse and get, supersaver dec 19, and switch back , what they said you couldn’t ?
I asked why could they not do it,said it was not possible, it’s a broker deal.
Pressed again, and she gave it to me, switched me to it. No going via mse
Then I shot myself in the foot.,and asked them to reverse it, which they said ok, done, in the space of 10 minutes.
The reason I asked for reversal was because it was , to me, no cheaper than their normal online dec 19 deal, and I was determined to switch to small boys, till these companies going bust put me off.
Now I am back on Dec 18 waiting to see what SP bring out next, but determined not to switch from SP now.
I can still have super saver 19 , they say,by going via mse, if it is still available, and clicking it.
I am in a bit of a tizzy now what to do, wait till near end of dec,on my dec18 cheap tariff and see if they bring anything better out, or try and get SS dec 19 back via mse, or , another chat,or just take one of their tariff online dec 19 , and say sod it, had enough:)
I have just about looked at all options and deals, and am no more wiser than I was weeks ago, only I know I have to decide soon:rotfl:
Their must be a moral to this, but I know it is a b####ache.
SP could not have been better to me, it’s my indecision, by events of this last week, and the fragility now of the small boys market now that has convinced me to stay with SP.
Better the devil you know, perhaps is the moral ?
Why did you think SS dec 19 was much cheaper than their fixed dec 19 ?
My sums was about only a fiver difference for me ?

I'm in the Eastern region and the SS December 19 is actually £7 p.a. cheaper than the online fixed Dec 19 so in transferring to EDF Easy Online I'm still saving but not a lot. I didn't actually go through a comparison site for the SS Dec 19. They said that what was available to me are the tariffs on their web site. Their first offer was in fact much more expensive with a standing charge per day of over 36p per fuel!0 -

I’m in Leeds, whatever that region falls into ?
There are a few tariffs , some with SC as high as 46 p per day !
The fixed dec19 is 19ppd.
Just gonna do some more sums.
See whether I would benefit from high/ low SC, but I don’t think the overall yearly amount differs whether on 19ppd or 46ppd SC,as I am at home all year round and medium to high usage.
The only thing is, I can control the usage, but not the SC once I have chosen a tariff.
Swings and roundabouts I think ?
Not sure if their is any rule of thumb to work it out, never know how much you are going to use, only what you have used.?
EE customers have been put on a “ deemed tariff” whatever that is according to their website. Details will be sent to them in due course.
No mention of it, so will have to depend on EE customers to give feedback on that.
Will give it another 12 months and see what happens over this winter with the smaller companies.
If it is a cold one as forecast, then a lot more will go to the wall sooner rather than later.
Something has to happen, the market cannot be left to police itself, and Ofgem , in my eyes aren’t capable, so watch this space as they say:beer:

Anyway a deemed tariff is provided for under Schedule 6 of the Electricity Act 1989 and Schedule 2B of the Gas Act 1986.
It depends on whether Scottish Power have such a deemed tariff in place, whether SP will make a deemed tariff specifically for EE customers or whether it just means the standard, variable tariff.
When I moved into my present property I took over the energy supplied to the property by British Gas and until I agreed a tariff with them I was put onto their standard variable tariff which is the deemed tariff. As it happened though I didn't make an agreement with BG and switched to SP and the rest is history.
All I can say for EE customers is "OUCH".
Here's what SP says:Will I move to a different energy tariff with higher charges when I move to ScottishPower?
We want to make sure you get fair prices. So until you choose a tariff that suits you we’ve put you on a Deemed tariff, which means that while it’s a contract you’ve not chosen, you are still responsible for paying these energy costs. We’ll send you the full details of this tariff, including your prices and tariff terms, shortly.
With ScottishPower’s flexible approach to changing tariffs, you can choose a contract and tariff that’s better for you - with no fuss, and it’s free of charge to change between ScottishPower tariffs at any time.0 -

The high SC will not be so painful in the event of usage increase, but less beneficial if it decreases. Don't you have any idea of the trends in your use pattern to help your rumination? In such matters I would do some calculations +/- various %ages to see what the options are.
Bu that's just me!0 -
Just the highlighted bits.

Can't see into the future. What Scottish Power does in its annual summary is to take past consumption and then apply it to the future and then calculate a direct debit amount on that related to the price.
On calculating standing charge compared with unit prices, comparison sites including MSE CEC and Uswitch does it for us. There is actually no need to calculate it ourselves. But if we don't actually believe it we can look at the calculations and calculate it for ourselves.0
