IOM student looking to open UK bank account

We live on Isle Of Man. My son started at Uni of Liverpool in Sept 18. He has both a Santander International and a Natwest International bank account on IOM. He would like to open a UK Student bank account without having to close or transfer his existing IOM bank accounts. Can he do this and if so, how? He had gone into the Santander branch in Liverpool and they said he would have to transfer his account from the IOM. He doesn't want to do this as trying to open/reopen a bank account when he returns here in couple of years time is a nightmare due to all the ringfencing legislation! This is my first time to post so hopefully I've done it correctly. Thank you

It's mentioned that:

If you already have an existing Santander current account you’ll need to transfer this.

Santander International used to be a separate entity from Santander UK, but now that it has become Santander UK plc, Isle of Man Branch, you would likely have to fulfill the obligation to transfer over.

His IoM accounts not being student accounts, he would be eligible for a student account with another banking group, such as HSBC as advised, while still retaining the useful IoM accounts.

I'd just look to open up a mainland UK account with someone other than Santander and keep the IOM account open, but unused while he is away - it doesn't pay to be loyal to a particular bank these days so hunt around for the best deal!
