Couple of weird things.. standard home user issues

Right, went to speed up me uncles pc last night. Switched to "adjust windows for best performance", change his virus scanner to free-av.com instead of bloaty norton, he had a milllion stupid processes running so stopped the un-needed ones on startup.. runs MUCH faster.

He just called me with 2 issues:

1) Nothing in the USB ports is recognised anymore. So you plug it in, power goes through it, but the PC doesnt even detect it. I'm going to have a look tomorrow night and will check device manager but it sounds a bit strange :S. Its a 5 year old packard bell, early win xp days. Did that needs extra USB Drivers ya think? Maybe I stopped a process which detected things plugged into USB Drives? I've never heard of that but meh..

2) Adobe Photoshop... Apparently when he used to run it, the home page would have a history of recent pictures etc. Now when he opens it its all blank. Once again, is this due to a process I may have stopped? Or the adjust for best performance setting in windows?

Tbh both might be simple user error, but until I go tomorrow night I thought I'd just see if I can limit my time there :)

its prob all connected with best performance.
you may have to do a custom startup menu.
a program such as tuneup utilities would help you.
    Get some gorm.
  • Hmmm I didn't think plug and play used a background process on startup? (I turned processes off, not services btw...) Can't find anything in google anyway hmmm (no cc cleaner installed either btw)

Aas for a custom startup menu, what's that going to fix right now hehe? I don't believe that would fix the 2 issues.

Tuneup Utilities wouldn't either in this case...

    Hmm rather strange.

You forgot the first thing anyone says as a tech support person:

"Have you tried turning it off and on again?"
