Uses for old booze?

  • I got given a very large bottle of orange liqueur by someone who was moving house. I add it to the fruit and leave it to soak before I make a fruit cake - a la christmas cake style. It works very well.

They sound like the bottles which circulate endlessly in our village fete raffles year after year and get regifted back as tombola prizes!

Possibly good for using as an overnight loo cleaner, or pouring in saucers in the garden during the growing season to kill slugs?
Thanks Primrose, that's the sort of thing I was hoping for. I can't possibly pass on dodgy alcohol with a clear conscience! But thanks all for the other suggestions. Unfortunately DH really can't tolerate a drop, so no cooking or mulled option works (there's a limit to how much I can get through and still hold down a job ;-) )

    Take it to a party?
  • I'm not sure if this is the right board or not so please feel free to move it?

DH and I aren't big alchol drinkers and last christmas we were given a bottle of advoccat Warlinks, however it's still unopened.

As part of the ingredients is egg yolks, is it alright to try this year or is it not worth the risk and buy another to try?

I would assume that the recipe uses sterilised dried eggs.

I used to love lemonade snowballs as a child, however just the thought of drinking raw egg makes me feel quite ill now.

  • Hmmm I wasn't' sure. You tell it didn't appeal either, but since it was gifted it seems like an idea to try it as I never have. But I'm still dubious of egg yolks hanging about for a year thou it may all be in my head?:rotfl:

    It's booze. It'll be fine.

A big glass, nearly half a pint sized....
Splash of lime cordial (75p/750cl in Sainsbobs).
    Bigger splash of advocaat
    Top up with lemonade.
Cherry on a stick on top if you can.

When I say splash I mean a quick flick of the wrist.
Double advocaat to lime amount ... to try to put a figure on it.

Those little cream pots you get in catering, individual portions on the side of a saucer.... size-wise one of those of lime, two of advocaat.

Then taste it and see if you personally want more advocaat or more lemonade.

    You use very little advocaaat.

Not the way I make them....

Anyway, sniff it or sip it, if it's off, it'll be obvious.
