I've been very stupid...

And forgot to pay my credit card bill.

I transferred the full balance online a day after the deadline (4th Nov), so it will only be a few days late, but I see that Natwest have already charged me their £12 late payment fee.

I can live with paying the late payment fee (it's completely my fault after all, and I'm very annoyed at myself for forgetting - good job I got a pay rise this month :)), but is this likely to affect my credit report? Is there anything I can do about it now?

I never spend more than I can afford on credit, so I really should set up a direct debit to pay it off in full each month... Ah well, a lesson learnt I guess.

  • Hi
You could try phoning them and apologising. If you are normally ok, you might get away with a slapped wrist. I should definitely set up a dd in future - even if its only for the minimum. I wouldn't think it will affect your credit rating as long as you don't make a habit of it.

If the payment shows on your statement when you get it then there will be no late payment recorded on your credit file. Statements are produced a few days after the due date....which begs the question why they charge you when they haven't had to write to you or anything....but there's another thread :-)

Thanks very much for your input TW and wyebird.
I'll give them a call tomorrow and hope I get through to someone nice and understanding.
It's very good to know that it will likely get missed off my credit file, as it's the first payment (and hopefully the last) that I've ever missed. Plus having only recently graduated, I don't think my credit report is particularly strong right now.

Yes you have been very STUPID. I would hope you have now set up a direct debit for at least take the min. payment each month. Certainly worth phoning them and they may give you least £6.00 back.

    Good luck!

    Hia!

Its stupid but very easy to do. Luckily it doesnt affect your rating as its only a day or two late and they did get your money so its not worth spliting hairs over. Just dont do it again and set up a dd for the minimum. Thats what I do and iv stopped worrying now!
  • I rang my credit card company and got my £12 late fee back.
    Well worth it !
