Mice in rented accommodation

My son has been in his flat for two weeks and he has twice seen a mouse.
Who's responsibility is it to deal with the problem - the tenant or the landlord?
We've got some traps and bait left from our recent infestation at our house that we can let him have, but if they are not successful and an outside contractor (or the council pest control officer) has to be called it, who should pay?

Did he take one with him when he moved out;)
In all seriousness. Let the landlord know asap. If he had been there for more than a few weeks I would have put the responsibility at his door however as he has just moved in its worth asking the LL to resolve.
I would recommmend he has a look behind furniture, kickboards in the kitchen, understair cupboards for any evidence he can photograph to back up his claims of having mice in the property.0 -
Pest control if left can become the responsibility of the tenant to remove, however given the fact that your son has only recently moved in I would guess that the mice were there before he was so the quicker that the issue is reported to the LL the better the chances are of the LL taking a more active approach to it.
My off spring also had an infestation of pests when they recently moved in,not mice but a case of something that should have been dealt with by the LL prior to move in....sadly it wasn't and even though the LL was aware that the pests were there on move in he still claimed it was our responsibility to irradiate going forward.in S 38 T 2 F 50

Thank you - will let him know to contact his landlord. Hopefully he will prove to be one of the good ones!0

If he saw mice right after he moved in then probably those mice lived there before. So obvious it supposed to be on landlord.0

Sigh. it seems like mice are the least of their worries. The landlord has been served notice that the block of flats has to be pulled down, as it wasn't built in line with the planning permission that was granted.0

probably because the mice ate the original plansHurdyGurdy wrote: »Sigh. it seems like mice are the least of their worries. The landlord has been served notice that the block of flats has to be pulled down, as it wasn't built in line with the planning permission that was granted.0 -
