My smart gas meter died a year ago

We have just discovered that our 10 year old smart gas meter has not been working for some time and that the pushbutton does not bring up the display.

I assumed that, after 10 years, the battery simply needs changing as the installer had told me that these had an approximate 10 year battery life.

Looking back at the bills from the last year show that ALL gas readings since December 2017 have been 'estimates', but electricity is reading okay.

The table top display unit shows no gas was used in the last 12 months!

When I reported this to our supplier, they told me that I needed both of the meters replacing, and so have made an appointment early next month.

Do these meters have a way to keep recording the gas consumption, after the battery or meter fails, so that the real consumption can be recovered so the customer eventually gets a correct bill ?

Another case of not keeping an eye on your bills.

You should have noticed that you have been getting estimated bills and done something about it.

Normally a smart gas meter will shut off the gas supply when the battery gives up, but occasionally it will fail and leave the gas valve open. Prepayment gas meters have the same problem.
BG have been installing the Landys Gyr smart gas meters for over ten years now so I would expect a lot of these meters to be running out of battery power. The Lithium battery is supposed to last around 10 years It is supposed to send a low battery message back to the supplier , but many are now dumb due to switching away from BG.
It does not store info on usage once the battery has died. Suppliers will rebill on average/historical usage once they become aware of the meter battery failing with valve open. They usually err on the customers side and are very fair on the back billing.
  • Thanks for the info.

The meter was installer by Eon and although we have switched tarrifs several times, we have not switched away from Eon.

They should have realised the meter wasn't working some time ago.

And here's me thinking smart meters would mean no more estimated bills.

Another bending of the truth about how wonderful they are?

Many prepayment meters have these batteries which are supposed to last ten years but fail within two or so years involving phone calls waitins and are an inconvenience. When my previous prepayment meter failed they gave a four hour window and arrived at the last minute.I was then told it was the frost that kills them.

Why has my smart gas meter battery failed after under 3 years?

As can be seen the results of failed equipment can be problamatic."Should normally last up to 10 years" because it should doesn't necessarily mean it will as mentioned above.engineers that have visited say that on average its 2 -3 years?

Hardly evidence of a claim that a smart meter battery from a Secure Liberty gas meter only lasts less than three years. Ovo only use that model of smart gas meter which also can be in either prepay or credit mode..Not worthy of a link IMO
