Only 18, a mere youth, ours is twice that, the new one won't last that long.0

mine is 35 years old,,what make and model is it OP??Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

Talk to at least three installers. They need to look at what is already in your home and to consider your lifestyle/heating and hot water needs. That said, you might struggle to get quotes at this time of the year as it is the busy season for heating engineers. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Opinions on British Gas for new boiler. I KNOW its more expensive that anyone else but I can get 25% off (know someone who works for them) and they do 2 years interest free.0

Yes, but 25% off is not a good deal when they are typically 40% more to start with.
You still haven't told us the make and model and what the fault is.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
As Macman says 25% off an inflated price is still more expensive than you might get from a more reasonable plumber.
Dont forget that the cost of replacing a boiler gets bumped up significanlt by "power flushing", the requirement for a condenaste darin, extra energy efficient controls etc. Get a quote from BG by all means but also get another two or three from local plumbers.
As others have said, what make boiler is it and what's wrong with it. Spending £2k to save £200 a year will take you ten years to get back and you will probably have a repair or two in that time as modern boilers are significanly lesss reliable than older ones and the parts cost significantly more as well.
The collective wisdom on this forum is to keep the old one going for as long as you can before it totally dies.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
Good advice here about getting several quotes.
British Gas keep trying to convince me that my 14 year old boiler should be replaced but it's still going strong, albeit with the odd repair now and then.
They quoted me a price which was around £500 more than a local plumber could do it for and that was with a 'discount' of £700!0 -
British gas quoted me £3500 to replace boiler.
Searching around I noticed Travis Perkins were doing a trade offer on Glow Worm Boilers which came with free inhibitors and system cleaning fluids. I got a builder who had an account there to buy a 30kw one for me and gave him a drink. Total cost including drink: £480 delivered to my door.
The same Boiler was £750 if I'd bought retail (some places were over £800).
I then got a registered one-man band installer to pop round and fit it for me. He supplied the descaler and any bits of pipework needed. He gave me the building regs certificate and the proper installation paperwork which I used to initiate the boiler warranty etc. He charged £450.
The installer was going to take the old boiler away but I asked him to leave it. I stripped the old boiler down to its parts and sold all the working parts on eBay which returned just over £200.
Total cost: £7300 -

My Glow Worm bolier is now in its 29th year. My plumber who services it every year said 'the gas board' would have condemned it years ago but it is still going strong, has never broken down and he tells me that most of the parts are still available.0 -
I thought I might have one of the oldest Glow Worm boilers - but mine is "ONLY" 28 years old - hahaha.
It's interesting that some of my neighbours who have similar style home (ours was built in 1929) and who have far more modern boilers than we have, their bills are lower, but not that much lower.
Also both my wife and I work from home, and some days (like today) the boiler is on - so I would have expected our bills to be MUCH MUCH more with our "inefficient" boiler.
I have no doubt there are some savings to be made with modern boilers - but if you have a big house, and want to keep warm - it costs!!!0
