Advice please on impact of paying defaulted debt

I've been in dispute with a utility company about what I consider to be an erroneous charge relating to a long-closed account with them. We've now reached the position where they have posted a default status with Experian and this has adversely affected my previously excellent score.

I am uncertain whether to go on with the dispute or just pay ( the relatively small amount ) to put it behind me - especially as it's now impacting on my credit score.

1. If I pay it - will they automatically update the status with Experian or do I have to request this ( and how )?
2. If I pay will my score still be affected by what has happened and is there anything else I should do to repair it? ( I have no other issues of this nature and previously had a top score ).

I'd be grateful for any constructive advice - and thanks for reading.

  • A settled default looks much better than unsettled, though the default will remain for 6 years. It will be automatically updated.

Lenders will view you more positively, regardless of any chnges in your credit score, which is just a made number that isn't seen by anyone but you.

    Argh forget credit scores.

Once a default is registered the damage is done, so no matter what you do now, normally nothing can alter it, your unfortunately stuck with it for 6 years.

    However.......

If you believe the debt is not owed, then continue with the complaint, but make sure any restitution includes default removal.
