OP comes on here moaning its too expensive to buy a house, people offer help and advice on cutting back and scrimping and saving in the short term but all they get back is "I don't want to".... WELL TOUGH!!
OP if you can't be bothered to help yourself (with the aid of very good advice on here) and make sacrifices then thats your problem....
I am young(ish), I don't earn a lot, I have lots of student debt and a loan to pay back from when I travelled round the world.... I still go out every day, work hard, earn a crust and then (without any financial help from parents etc) managed to buy a MODEST house (which I overpay my mortgage 20% each month).... its tough for me but I manage it.... I don't want a pat on the back from anyone for doing that, getting home at night to my own house is pat on the back enough... this weekend I have loads of work to do on my house (tidy garden for winter, paint skirting boards and make a bath pannel).... its never ending DIY so maybe you should think yourself lucky you don't have a house else you'd moan about having to actually waste your weekends doing DIY on it..
I'm sorry lieutanant dan but you really do sound like someone who wants everything to fall into your lap without any hard work at all... and IMHO thats why you are still renting while Mr and Mrs Polish come over here, work all the hours god sends for crap wages and still manage to afford a house...

I agree with the OP that it is indeed very difficult for FTBs to get on step on property ladder.
However, people who bought 10 or so years ago, did not have to suffer similar hardship that FTBs are facing now. The sole reason for that, house price had a far less income multiple then.
No offence to anyone, but those who are advising for hardship to save a deposit, would have suffered the same situation as of OP, if they had bought their house in the current market!Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0 -

Dan, I would definitely go for the houseshare option - you will almost certainly get a much nicer room/house for less than a bedsit and if you find the right person to share/lodge with you won't feel trapped in one room, i.e. try and find someone who works different shifts to you and doesn't mind you using their lounge, etc, when they're not around.
A friend of ours moved in with us for a couple of years when she split up with her partner - it helped us to pay the mortgage and it helped her save thousands for her own place.
Now that mortgage rates are beginning to bite there will be probably be lots of people who would want a lodger to help with the bills.

I get so frustrated reading some of these threads! blimey Dan was just after a bit of advice.
Im in a similar situation and also finding it tricky to save a deposit, what with relatively high rent, bills, car etc etc with whats left over it would take a very long time to save 10k, 15k etc etc etc!
The POSITIVE suggestions made in this thread (ignoring the first few numpties) sound like a plan for DanO/D -£550!! clear by Aug 2008

Lt. Dan why don't you go and see a mortgage broker to see if you can get a 100% mortgage so that you can buy without any deposit? It's the only way I managed to get my first flat as I could never afford to save up for a deposit. I realise that this may be risky if prices drop, but if owning your own home is important to you then you may well feel that this risk is justified. I did.0
