UK Fines for Spanish vehicle of £1800 from EPC!

I recently bought my first van in Spain (the country i grew up in) after learning to drive. I drove it back to England where I was living at the time. A few days ago I was horribly shocked to receive several fines from TFL from the period of time I spent in London. These letters were sent from Sweden by a company named Euro Parking Collection to my address in Spain where the van is registered and where we now live.

From what I have gathered from research, EPC purchase fines from TFL for drivers whose vehicles are registered outside of the UK. The fines that we received are huge - they total up to 1800 pounds, and that is if we pay them within a week of receiving the letter which gives us three more days. If not the fines supposedly triple! There are two fines for driving within the London Emissions Zone and one for not paying the congestion charge. I am new to driving and didn’t know anything about these charges.

I can’t afford these fines. From research it seems as though EPC do not have authority to do anything other than send lots of threatening letters. It seems that they could in theory take us to court, but people on forums seem to think it would not be worth their while to do this and that they rely on scaring people into paying up.

On top of this, my insurance company told me in confidentiality that I should ignore the letters, but if I do this I can never enter the UK again with the van because it will be impounded. Which is okay by me - I will do anything to avoid paying the fine!! I am also worried that the fine might keep raising if I ignore it? And whether I will be able to sell the van if it has unpaid fines registered?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I agree with your insurance company to ignore.
