Need To Find a Competitive Gas Supplier for a First Installation to a Property....
My parents have decided to change from Oil central heating to gas. They are currently awaiting their house to get connected to the gas mains by the utility company.
I need to find a competitive gas supplier.
I've had a quick look on the usual comparison sites and noticed that they require you to know what your current gas usage is so that compare the prices. With not having gas supplied to their house, they don't have any existing usage / bills to compare.
How do I find which gas suppliers are competitive in my parents' local area?
Many thanks.....

Just pick one, say British/Scottish Gas and use their standard tariff as a starting point.
Remember you are interested in the TOTAL ANNUAL cost only not any saving the comparison sites says are available.
The UK gas average is now 12000kWh per annum. Run comparison using that and then try twice again with 10,000kWh and 15,000kWh to see if the results show different companies in the list of cheapest suppliers.
When you have found a supplier, please research them on this site and elsewhere before approaching them.0 -
Take care. Meters are not installed by the suppliers per se. For example, I am in a new build and my electricity meter was installed by Scottish Power Energy Networks. An administrative process follows installation where the meter is registered to an address on the National Database. Sadly, as many of my neighbours have found out, this is not necessarily a quick process. Until a meter is properly registered, no supplier can takeover the supply.0

The gas supply company who pipe the gas to the house do not fit the meter, but they do issue the MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) - Make sure they do as no company will supply gas without it.
The meter is supplied the company you choose as your gas supplier, the present Electricity supplier is the easy route, but if they are one of the small companies they may not be up to speed with new meter fitting.
If so, choose one of the BIG6, say EDF, and when it's up and running Switch a cheaper alternative, say Zog0 -
Thanks for the replies, much appreciated. Good points raised. I'll do some more research and will also check out the existing electricity supplier too.
Thanks again!0
