Iresa - money owed

I left Iresa and transferred to Igloo, just as they went in to administration. My reason for leaving, was the poor service, the constant ignoring of my submitted meter reading and the insistence to constantly increase my direct debit without reason.
Happy with Igloo, but today I was contacted by Octopus, who were instructed to take over from Iresa, who inform me that I am owed £400 and that it will be paid in to my Octopus account.
I have tried to respond to say that I don't want anything to do with Octopus and I do not want my energy supply moving, but I cant see how to get this £400?

I have emailed Igloo to confirm if they are aware of any credit on transfer, is there anything else i could do?

If they will not refund the credit when it gets to your account then switch to another supplier. They will then produce a final bill and would have to refund the credit to you.

  • Thanks - logged in to Iresa account, who went in to administration in July and it does appear that i left the account in credit. They no longer supply my power as I switched out a week before they collapsed to Igloo, so supply of energy ins't an issue.
But potentially there is £400 sitting in an account of a failed energy that belongs to me. The only option I was given was to transfer to Octopus by clicking a button at the bottom of an email to 'close my iresa account and open my Octopus account and accept the final credit'.
I don't want anything to do with Octopus - I just want my money back!

You will have to contact Octopus - suggest you phone and explain that you moved to Igloo just before Iresa went kaput. As a matter of interest are you 100% sure that your supply is with Igloo??

As far as I can see, you've got two options.

    1) contact Octopus as they've requested and they'll sort out your credit refund.

    2) contact the IRESA administrators and get put on the back of the unsecured creditors list and if there's anything left when it's all sorted out you might get a penny in the pound (ie £4 for your £400).

IMHO option 1 looks to be the best. But that's only my opinion

Did the transfer of supply go through before the failure of Iresa? If not, then you were a customer of Octopus whether you like it or not. That said, my transfer away from GBEnergy were through 2 days before GBEnergy failed. The SoLR - Coop Energy - continued to use my old GBEnergy account number whilst they were dealing with my credit refund. Like @matelodave suggests, I would contact the SoLR as it has the responsibility for refunding your credit balance.

i transferred away from IRESA before they went bust & Octopus eventually sent me an email allowing me to get the outstanding IRESA credit transferred to my bank account

Octopus must think you didnt complete the transfer away from IRESA before they went bust so they are trying to take over your supply

You need to phone Octopus & sort out between you what has happened eg has the transfer to Igloo really gone through or not - could the transfer have failed to complete because IRESA went bust before the date Igloo were due to take over the supply ?

Octopus will be handling what was your Iresa account. You may be able to register online with Octopus without moving your supply to them and get your refund that way.

My Octopus online account is still accessible although I moved a few months ago.

If it has taken them this long to get in touch it would appear they are contacting you purely to administer the refund of the credit rather than to supply your energy, those with active Iresa energy accounts were contacted months ago. Iresa administrators will refund you nothing but Octopus will do it using the government levy funds and I presume the easiest way to do this will be with an account.

I was due refund, only £20, after I'd moved form Iresa & they went bust before refund

I never contacted Octopus, but had e mail form them asking me to fill in online form with bank details for them to return my money

I did this, money went in my bank the same week

    " Dear *******,

We are Octopus Energy, appointed by energy regulator Ofgem to look after the customers of Iresa when they went bust in July. According to Iresa's administrators, you're owed £20.10 from your time as an Iresa customer.

To accept a final credit of £20.10 and transfer it to your bank account, we'll just need your bank details. We'll only use these details to process your refund, after which we'll delete them from our system.

There was a link under which went to Octopus with the form
