Best credit card for deposits aboard?

Hi all,

I am travelling to USA next summer and I need a credit card for deposits for car rentals and hotels. Does it have to be a credit card specific to spending abroad or can it be any credit card? If an specific card can be advised that would be great.

Will you be using it purely for 'pending' transactions or will the transactions actually hit the account?
If you get a Halifax clarity or similar they don't charge extra for international transactions - just be aware that sometimes a hefty amount will be tied up on the card so make sure you have sufficient limit for your needs.

Any credit card can be used for such deposits, but when used for payment most impose fees and/or a 'loading' on the exchange rate of up to 3%. For the ones that don't, see:
