What conversation do I need to have with the garage?
Hi there,
I bought my daughter a 2004 mini as her first car on the basis it was in excellent condition and had a load of work done on it by the previous owner. One thing that was replaced in June this year was the power steering pump and unfortunately it has failed again.
I have the receipt for the work and my garage has suggested that the part should still be under warranty and I should push the original garage who fitted it to replace it.
Am I legally entitled to claim on the warranty even though I didn't pay for the work? Also, does anyone think it's reasonable to suggest my own garage does the work and they pay for it?
Thanks ever so much.

Depends if the warranty is transferable. Id give the original garage a ring at least. Worst case you get nothing.0

I would take it to the garage that did the work in the first place and see what they say.
I think it is very very unlikely the original garage is going to pay for the part to be replaced by another garage.
If your garage take the part out they may exchange it for you but cannot see them paying the labour charge of another garage.0 -
the garage that fixed it , their contract is with the person who paid for it and it ends there.
You do however have rights with the supplying dealer. They have to prove the car was fault free at time of sale.0 -
I bought it privately with all the paperwork supporting the work that had been done on it so felt it was a good bet.
So if I'm reading things correctly, I may be able to recoup some of the cost from the people who supplied the pump? To be honest, I know I'll just have to suck up the labour cost as one of those things but the cost of a new pump would make a good dent in the cost of repair.
Thanks.0 -
The mini power steering pump as may have guessed is a problematic part on the car. They are prone to failure. As such any reconditioning business usually only offer a 3 month conditional warranty on this part.
Warranty is usually non transferable but it depends on the remanufacturers terms and conditions.0 -
no you cannot recoup anything from anyone. It is a private sale which you did not make clear in your first post.0

If I had "a load of work done " (usually expensive ) on my car, I would be keeping it. Unless of course, the issues were not getting fixed......0

You or your daughter weren't party to the contract. You have no rights.0

As above however it costs nothing to ask the garage who replaced the pump especially if they're a local business but don't go in there guns blazing as neither the company that supplied the part or the garage that fitted it are under any obligation to resolve the problem for anyone but the person who paid them to do the job. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
