Delivery charge for large electrical items

Need a new washing machine (door fallen off v v old one), so have done the amount of price comparisons and research that is expected of an MSE via the internet. We popped into Powerhouse this evening and admired the desired machines - until we saw that they charge £40 for delivery and practically rip your arm off to take money for a guarantee at £109. Oh, and to pick up our old one and take it away, it would cost an extra £10!
Argos charge about £25 per model for delivery and £10 to take it away. Whereas John Lewis gave us free delivery (same model and price in Argos and other retailers) and are charging us £9 to take the old washing machine away. Oh, and there was no pressure to buy an extended warranty because they already believe that it comes with quite a decent one!
HOW ON EARTH can Powerhouse basically charge £50 for delivery on a model that is only worth four times that amount? The lady in the shop seemed most put out that we thought that this was criminal activity in a legal form.

Simple, Powerhouse customers are daft enough to believe the banner adverts proclaiming cheap prices without actually bothering to check the details.
I always find it funny that people perceive John Lewis to be expensive, when they are almost always the cheapest and give the best service.0 -
Or you could look online for a good price, and delivery (sometimes included in the price) try https://www.rtd.uk.com
Also if you know someone with Barclays, if they have a connect card they can buy it and get an extra years free guarantee (this may not be true). If they have a platinum connect card they can get an extra 2 years free guarantee (this definately IS true). And it doesn't matter that the thing is delivered, kept and used at a different address to the card holder.0 -
Comet have free delivery on some items, and will take away old appliances for free. I used that service when the door fell off my tumble drier and had to buy a new one. Here I go again on my own....0

if it's only the door hinge that has sheered off and the machine is working otherwise (despite its age), why not see if you can get hold of a new door hinge. Same thing happened to us and we got a new hinge for a tenner. Saved us having to buy a machine0 -
I bought several things from Comet and Curries over the years and managed to get them in various hatchbacks. Recently got a small freezer in my Matiz (had to take the wrapping off though). Always try to pick things up yourself if at all possible.

I have bought several large items from independent electrical dealers who are part of the Euronics organization. Each time they have not charged for delivery and even took away the old one free of charge. Co-op stores will do the same.
Another advantage of using these dealers is that they won't try and con you into an extended warranty contract and can sometimes be cheaper than Currys or Comet. What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?0 -
I forgot to say, the old one will (quite often be the case) be taken away by your council for free. Some councils do charge for this I expect about 10 - 20 quid. Mine is free. Even if there is a charge, if you are in a built up neighbourhood (not posh), just leave it down the road somewhere and tell the council someone has left a washing machine there, and could they come and take it away.
Door hinge, might be repairable as the other poster said.0 -
Wig I think you will find fly tipping is illegal, not money saving.0

Apollo2000 delivered a dishwasher and washing machine free of charge (separate occasions). That was about 18 months ago. The prices were good as well.0
