Where to rehome cats?

Hello everyone,

Please no judgement before I start this post.

I have got two cats (around 5 years old) they are lovely, however my son and I both have asthma (I have recently been diagnosed) and I think their fur is playing it up.

I would like to rehome them but am not sure where the best place to go is? I have tried asking on my FB page as I obviously know everyone on my friends list would give them a good home but no one responded.

I don't really want to separate them and one of them is a black cat so I know she won't be rehomed as quick as my other cat. They are both microchipped and have been neutered.

I have also tried the rehoming site pets4homes. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
C xx

To be honest as an asthma/allergy sufferer you get used to the allergens around you. (In my test I was allergic to everything, even the control (not that it is allergies in the bad sense, is there a better word these days?)).

That is, I am fine around my cats but if I go to someone else's house and get in contact with theirs, my eyes can start watering etc. Avoidence is probably a bad thing anyway (except fringe cases).

It is also not the fur but the dead skin as far as I recall. Brush them regularly witha fine flea comb and things shoulf improve.

As for your attempts. They seem a little weird. Have you tried a proper place that rehomes cats near you? FB and P4H would be beyond the bottom of my list.

P.S. (edit) That was not judgement just advice. (in case you take offence).

I am allergic to fur, feathers, dander, dust etc and have 3 cats. I take anti histamines every day if required. I am very careful after petting the cats to go and wash my hands, as if i touch my face i get a bad reaction. I have now found I am less allergic now than i was at the beginning.
JUst to show you there are ways around it you may not have thought of

otherwise google "cat rescue centre HOMETOWN" for rehoming centres, they are very used to this reason of needing rehoming

Thank you :) no offence was taken.
I am waking in the middle of the night with coughing fits, so would rather rehome them.

There are some places near me but my concern was that they may put them down if they are not rehomed in a certain time or would split them up. Plus I didn't like the fact they would be sitting in a cattery.
If I rehomed them myself I would want to do an inspection of the house they are going to, to ensure they are going somewhere nice and am asking for a small amount of money to ensure it's not someone dodgy.

Thank you :) my son is only 2 so would be a pain to keep washing his hands plus anti histamines make me groggy (even non-drowsy) and would rather not take them a lot as I'm already on other meds for various things and same for my son.

Fair enough. However I think your expectations are unrealistic.

Money. Maybe if they are pedigree. Otherwise no.

And there are many places where putting down is a last resort and not a quick thingh (thoush yes some are). There are also palces that say they would not do that. Search for local palces and even ask them their policy maybe.

May I ask why they are unrealistic?

I'm only asking for £20 so I know they go to a good home, same with checking someones house, that is what a rehoming center would do. I am going to get in contact with some and see if they can help.

Asking for money does not ensure some one is going to give a good home,

although rescues are usually overwhelmed its possible they have foster carers who can look after cats waiting to be rehomed.

I agree with other posters about the asthma, the cats may not affect it at all, perhaps the medication will ease your symptoms without having to lose your pets.

Please be aware that there are people that scour social media looking for unwanted pets to use as bait for fighting dogs.

I understand that, however checking their house surely would be a good thing too?

I am going to phone a few shelters tomorrow and see if anywhere can take them in.

If you are certain you wish to re home your cats, I would suggest you take them to your local cat re-homing centre and explain they need to be re-homed together. Don't give them to the RSPCA as they have been known to put healthy animals to sleep.

Re-homing will be traumatic for the cats, so it's important that you do your research and find a good re-homing centre.

^^^^ this - do not sell them or advertise them on social media.

With your son so young, I agree it really isn't fair to force him to live in a home that makes him ill, and while most people find their allergies improve with exposure its not the case for everyone and sometimes they get worse and worse over time. To be diagnosed with asthma at such a young age I'm assuming its quite severe, so you are doing the right thing.

If you knew you were asthmatic and THEN went out and got two cats, then I'd judge you! ;)

If no family or friends want to take them, then I would try all your local rescues, big or small. Don't listen to scare stories about the RSPCA, the branches are all run locally and are independent from the central charity. Give thee one nearest you a call and have a chat.
